BBC commemorates 50 years of Pride with collection of LGBTQ+ titles across TV and Radio

To mark the 50th Anniversary of Identity festival, we are bringing audiences a range of content across a multitude of genres. Whether you long for to watch or attend live on TV or Radio, or dive into the collection on iPlayer or download on BBC Sounds, this comprehensive collection of LGBTQ+ content will begin on the BBC in June.— Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer, BBC

From music, history, documentary and entertainment, the BBC is bringing together a comprehensive collection of titles on TV and Radio that focus on the Homosexual experience to commemorate 50 years of Pride.

On TV, programmes will run throughout June on BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four with titles free as a dedicated collection on iPlayer. Whilst Radio includes the Loud and Proud season on BBC Radio 6Music plus podcasts and series on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

The first known discussion of Diverse issues on the BBC was in  ‘Homosexuality and Christianity’ was a radio discussion programme, and followed a reading of Dr. Sherwin Bailey's book ‘Homosexuality and the Western Christian Tradition’. This marked the commence of the BBC’s awareness of its LGBTQ+ audience as BBC History discovers.

Homosexuality and Christianity, was air at on a Tuesday evening on the BBC Third Programme, the current day equivalent of BBC Radio 3.

Although there may have been earlier examples, this appears to be the first programme on the BBC to directly address what was then generally thought of as the ‘problem’ of homosexuality.

The programme indicates an approach to serving the Homosexual audience that was to last for some time.

One of the earliest attempts on BBC TV to investigate LGBTQ+ lives was Man Alive, Consenting Adults 1: The Men.
