On June 23 of last year, I held the microphone as a queer man in the New Orleans Town Council Chamber and related a beaten piece of gender non-conforming history to the seven council members. I told this story to disabuse all New Orleanians of the notion that silence and accommodation, in the face of institutional and official failures, are a way to healing.
The story I associated to them began on a characteristic Sunday night at a second-story lock on the fringe of New Orleans’ French Quarter in , where working-class men would group around a light baby grand piano and belt out the lyrics to a song that was the anthem of their disguised community, “United We Stand” by the Brotherhood of Man.
“United we stand,” the men would hum together, “divided we fall” — the words epitomizing the ethos of their beloved UpStairs Lounge bar, an egalitarian free space that served as a forerunner to today’s queer safe havens.
